The 1953 coup enabled Western control over Iran’s oil and educated elite

Evidence

The coup recentered power in the hands of the American-supported Pahlavi monarchy and ceded control over the allocation of profitable government contracts and natural resources to foreign interests. The dictatorship of Reza Shah and son Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi also imposed a series of unpopular “modernization” reforms, including cultural secularization; it further institutionalized the Aryan Iranian history being taught in classrooms. In a climate in which real inequality within Iran was rising while Western powers gained control over the country’s reserves of oil, the state encouraged and sponsored newly middle-class families to enroll their sons in universities abroad. — Neda Maghbouleh, The Limits of Whiteness, 78
