The 1953 coup institutionalized Aryan racial ideology in Iranian state education
Evidence
In 1953, an American CIAand British-backed military coup deposed Iranian prime minister Mohammad Mossadegh, who had abolished serfdom, improved wages, and nationalized natural resources. The coup recentered power in the hands of the American-supported Pahlavi monarchy and ceded control over the allocation of profitable government contracts and natural resources to foreign interests. The dictatorship of Reza Shah and son Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi also imposed a series of unpopular “modernization” reforms, including cultural secularization; it further institutionalized the Aryan Iranian history being taught in classrooms. — Neda Maghbouleh, The Limits of Whiteness, 174
