Systemic dual-pressures drive the best liberatory teachers out of classrooms
Evidence
Accordingly, many teachers, consciously or unconsciously, reproduce a variety of authoritarian classroom practices—in the name of classroom management—in efforts to maintain physical control of their students. Teachers who struggle in this repressive climate to implement liberating strategies are often forced to wear masks of deception—saying what the principal or district office wishes to hear, while they try to do, behind closed doors, what they believe students need. Unfortunately, having to shoulder the hidden physical stress of this duplicity can drive some of the most effective teachers away from the class—leaving so they can remain in integrity with their liberatory commitment. While others, who begin to sense defeat, in frustration adopt more authoritarian approaches to manipulate and coerce cooperation, while justifying their actions, in the name of helping students succeed academically. — James D.
