Avoiding authoritarianism without directives can become neglectful laissez-faire teaching
Evidence
While Freire (1993) conceded the necessity of those directives, he saw the role of the progressive educator as to “diminish the distance between what they say and what they do so as not to allow a directivity to turn into authoritarianism or manipulation” (p. 116). Freire (1993) also warns that while attempting to avoid authoritarianism, teachers may lack directivity and slip into a “laissez-faire approach” (p. 116), which some students may internalize as a teacher who doesn’t care. — James D.
