Subcultures structure reading positions between dominant code and individual readings

Evidence

Umberto Eco has recently pointed to another, intermediary, level of structuration, between competence in the dominant code and “aberrant” individual readings: that level provided by subcultural formations. But, since subcultures are, by definition, differentiated articulations within a culture, it is more useful to specify this mediation within a somewhat different framework. — Hall, Stuart, Essential Essays, Volume 1, 806
