Sound scatters or diffracts around loudspeakers based on wavelength relative to size

Evidence

Recall that in Chapter 1, sound diffraction and scattering were discussed in Sections 1.5.9 and 1.5.10, and we saw that the size of an object depended on its size in wavelengths. That is, sound is diffracted around objects that are small with respect to wavelength and is reflected from objects that are large with respect to wavelength. The same thing applies to loudspeakers. — David M. Howard, Jamie Angus, Acoustics and Psychoacoustics, 2500

Categorization

  • FICTION: The wavelength/size diffraction principle could inform a fantasy magic system where small objects channel or muffle power differently than large ones.
  • XREF: connects to: Long bass wavelengths diffract less because they exceed cabinet dimensions — David Howard, Jamie Angus, coustics and Psychoacoustics, 2212; Rectangular loudspeaker cabinets produce significant diffraction even with off-center drivers — David Howard, Jamie Angus, coustics and Psychoacoustics, 2213
