Sinhalese nationalist ideology frames NGOs as foreign conspirators aiding the enemy

Evidence

The belief that a conspiracy exists between NGOs and Western governments to tarnish the image of Sri Lanka and its armed forces, favor the LTTE, and thereby also undermine the island’s sovereignty is deep-seated. For instance, after the military pushed back the LTTE in early September 2006 and captured Sampur, a strategic area in the Eastern Province, a nationalist newspaper said: “It is the duty of the hurrah boys and the intellectual pimps in NGO garb drumming up support for the LTTE and the international community to prevail upon him [LTTE leader Vellupillai Prabhakaran] to come to terms with reality and depart from the path of violence” (The Island 2006b). — Neil DeVotta, Sinhalese Buddhist Nationalist Ideology, 217
