Secular citizenship depends on a national personality it cannot shed
Evidence
It appears clearly that modern citizenship as it developed within the nation-state has become in part obsolete. But it also seems that we are still searching for a new multidimensional concept of citizenship which would be more adapted to the complexity of the global world. In the future, citizenship understood as a juridical status granting civil, political, and social rights and duties to the individual members of a political collectivity, as a set of specific social roles (voter, activist, etc.) performed by the citizen and as a set of moral qualities often referred to as the expression of civism, can be expected to be located not only at the nation-state level, but also locally at the regional level (for example, EU citizenship) and at the global level. β David Theo Goldberg, John Solomos, A Companion to Racial and Ethnic Studies, 845 (
