Secular-authority effects on prejudice may be group-specific, not general
Evidence
Gervais and I tested whether reminders of secular authority reduce distrust of atheists among believers. In addition, we tested three plausible alternative explanations. First, it is possible that a reduction in atheist distrust might just be one instantiation of a broader effect whereby reminders of secular authority reduce prejudice not just toward atheists, but toward any group. Second, as we have seen, evolutionary approaches to prejudice demonstrate that different prejudices are characterized by different perceived threats; secular authority may dampen these specific reactions across different forms of prejudice. Finally, it is possible that reminders of secular authority might simply make all outgroups seem more trustworthy. — Norenzayan, Ara, Big gods - how religion transformed…, 308
