Samatarâs acting presidency headed off a family power grab during Siyadâs absence
Evidence
During his absence and while the public was still stunned by the news of the accident, in conformity with the constitution, Senior Vice President General Muhammad Ali Samatar took over as acting head of state and declared a state of emergency. This appears to have prevented precipitate military action by members of Siyadâs family and close clansmen who were evidently deeply anxious about their position in the absence of the âOld Manâ â with whom they were in close touch while he was in the hospital in Saudi Arabia. â I.M.
