President Siyad nearly died in a May 1986 car crash
Evidence
In the meantime the unthinkable had nearly happened in Somalia. President Siyad was injured in an almost fatal car crash in May 1986. That he survived owed little to his security guards, who hijacked a Somali hospital doctor at gunpoint, forcing him to the scene of the accident without explaining what had happened and thus not allowing him to bring appropriate medical equipment. In the event, through the prompt action taken by Vice President Samatar and friendly governments, President Siyad was flown in a hospital plane to Saudi Arabia. He made a remarkable, if incomplete, recovery, returning to Somalia to resume his duties in June – though, naturally, hardly with his former vigour. — I.M. Lewis, I. M.
