Rokeach’s dogmatism captured authoritarianism across both political poles
Evidence
In response to this criticism, Rokeach (1954) conceptualized dogmatism as a cognitive style characterized by “a relatively closed cognitive organization of beliefs and disbeliefs about reality” that “provides a framework for patterns of intolerance towards others” (p. 195), and developed the D scale to measure it. Persons high on dogmatism would be highly susceptible to authoritarian ideologies of either right or left, and likely to reject persons who held beliefs different from their own. Like Allport, but not Adorno et al., Rokeach viewed cognitive style as a core trait of the “prejudiced personality.” — , Rudman, Laurie A - On the Nature of…, 2444 (

Unlike Rokeach, I find it hard to merge authoritarianism and dogmatism. For me the concepts cover different domains that may overlap somewhat but are … The core element here, I submit, is unjustified certainty. All of us who have ever been shown to be wrong when we were certain we were right—marriage helps you keep track of these—were therefore “‘dogmatic” in this dictionary sense, though quite understandably, I am sure. — Bob Altemeyer, The Authoritarian Specter, 2622 (
