Rokeach’s D Scale lacked clean evidence supporting its core premise from the start.
Evidence
I think that if you read The Open and Closed Mind with an open and critical mind, seeking a reasonably clean line of D Scale evidence supporting the basic premise of the work, you cannot find it. Instead, inconsistency rules, as we would expect given the basic weakness of the instrument upon which all the research depended. With such an unpromising beginning, set against the background of disillusionment in the 1960s with the identically flawed F Scale, one can wonder how the D Scale became such a heavily used psychological VACCHIANO, STRAUSS, AND HOCHMAN’S (1969) REVIEW One reason researchers continued to use the Dogmatism Scale may have been the impression that, despite all the odds against it, the test magically “worked.” — Bob Altemeyer, The Authoritarian Specter, 2569
