Reported case volumes began appearing in American states only after 1789

Evidence

In 1789, Ephraim Kirby published a volume of Connecticut Reports. In the preface, Kirby voiced the hope that a “permanent system of common law,” and an American one at that, would emerge in the United States. This hope was quickly realized. It was more than a matter of patriotism and pride. After all, lawyers were eager for a supply of reported cases, and were willing to pay for such reports. — Lawrence M. Friedman, A History of American Law, 1923
