Reparations would not end racism but would strengthen monitoring against backsliding.

Evidence

We have also seen how the end of chattel slavery did not end the reality of black American subordination. We should not expect reparations to be the end of the chapter on racism. (The Indian Claims Commission did not end the government’s taking of land from Tribal Nations.) We should expect a backlash to reparations, but the process would train many more watchful eyes to make sure that we don’t slip back into familiar patterns of white supremacy. This time could be different. We can fight back armed with better information and the political will to change. Also, because most of the reparations funding would not be individual cash payments, the fear expressed by some, that black people would be vulnerable to fraud and subject to being swindled, can be eliminated. — Dorothy A.
