Religious fundamentalism correlates with authoritarian aggression beyond the religion items’ tautology
Evidence
Item analyses revealed that Fundamentalism scores correlated significantly with all of the RWA Scale items, all but three of the twenty Ethnocentrism items, all of the ATH items, all of the Posse items, and each of the trial sentences. So religious fundamentalists did not score high on the RWA Scale just because of tautological relationships with the “religion” items on the latter. They gave more authoritarian answers to all of the items. And fundamentalists proved prejudiced against nearly all the minorities that were mentioned, not just one or two. They not only said they did not want to associate with homosexuals, they also said (more often than others), “homosexuals should be locked up to protect society” and “the AIDS disease currently killing homosexuals is just what they deserve.” They indicated that if the government decided to eradicate “radicals,” they would be less reluctant than most to tell officials about any radicals they knew, help hunt them down, and approve of torturing and killing them. — Bob Altemeyer, The Authoritarian Specter, 2122
