Redundant typology cells collapse into an opposite pair that enables interval measurement

Evidence

The typology of the four types was clearly nominal, but embedded in it was a concept pair. Once the two unimportant types—syndicalist and monist—disappeared (which they did almost immediately), the concept pair corporatism–pluralism was left. Because one was now left with corporatism and its opposite of pluralism, it was easy to generate data sets, almost all at the interval level, for the corporatism–pluralism concept pair. — Gary Goertz, Social Science Concepts and Measurement, 1319
