Rapid immigration raised Los Angeles Hispanic-white segregation from 47 to 61

Evidence

Obtaining the benefits of Whiteness requires loyalty to a racial-religious hierarchy that places Blacks and Native Americans at the bottom. Having been exposed to the underbelly of White supremacy as in-between races, the new “ethnic Whites” competing for jobs with Blacks and other racial minorities united in their support of racial segregation in housing, employment, and schooling as a means of preserving their newfound racial privilege. They adopted and perpetuated stereotypes of Blacks as lazy, violent, and dependent on state welfare, notwithstanding significant housing and loan subsidies granted to European immigrant families after World War II. — Sahar F. As a basis for the spatial segregation of neighborhoods in the United States, ethnicity (as distinct from “color”) has never been very stable and continues to decline in importance (see Cressey, 1971). And it seems possible that racial differentiation may follow the same course. In their stead, age and life-style, especially as they combine with class, appear to be emerging as major bases of segregation. — Lyn H.
