Newly assimilated ethnic Whites enforced segregation to protect their fresh racial privilege

Evidence

Obtaining the benefits of Whiteness requires loyalty to a racial-religious hierarchy that places Blacks and Native Americans at the bottom. Having been exposed to the underbelly of White supremacy as in-between races, the new “ethnic Whites” competing for jobs with Blacks and other racial minorities united in their support of racial segregation in housing, employment, and schooling as a means of preserving their newfound racial privilege. They adopted and perpetuated stereotypes of Blacks as lazy, violent, and dependent on state welfare, notwithstanding significant housing and loan subsidies granted to European immigrant families after World War II. — Sahar F.
