Racism subtypes each stem from distinct psychopathologies in psychoanalytic theory

Evidence

There have been some attempts to complicate the picture by building intervening variables into the analysis, but these do not apply the notion of overdetermination to the task. Kovel, for instance, distinguishes between dominative racism (based on oedipal desire and the equation black = phallus — paternal signifier), and aversive racism which is anal sadistic in orientation, and centered on fantasies about dirt and bodily functions repudiated in the search for some purified notion of a “higher” culture or civilization. Young-Bruehl (1996) similarly distinguishes between different types of racism in terms of their characteristic psychopathologies. Antisemitism is an obsessional prejudice displayed by people with overrigid superegos, whilst negrophobia exemplifies hysterical prejudice in which a group is chosen to act out forbidden sexually aggressive drives that the racist has repressed. This is contrasted with ethnocentrism and xenophobia which are based on a narcissistic refusal to value difference for its own sake. — David Theo Goldberg, John Solomos, A Companion to Racial and Ethnic Studies, 1295
