Racialized minorities in white communities may integrate but never congregate without provoking violence

Evidence

As an abstract conception of social categorization, then, race perhaps need not be exercised to exclusionary, debilitating, and humiliating ends against those taken not to belong to the designated privileged group. But historically it has been invoked throughout its half-millennial histories to these ends. It carries the prospect if not the promise of violence with it. It follows historically that when invoked to mark the human, race almost invariably operates as threat, as pernicious, as disruptive. Racism, of course, always incorporates race within it as basis of conceptual differentiation. In that sense, racisms can be said to order race, to require and to fabricate it. But the related point I am pushing here, the one to which the reach of arguments throughout the book draws, is the complementary one, at once simpler and more obscure. Race, in short, is never far from racism. — David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race, 1842 (#expands, via linked claim)

Central also to the rationality at work is the reckoning of rationalization and obfuscation, of rephrasing and reframing, of renaming and restating. This is a fragile rationality, indeed, as Foucault remarks more generally, one deeply insecure because always open to reversals, reprimands, recriminations, retaliations, revenge. The pathological insecurity at the heart of racial palestinianization, an insecurity that is simply the extreme embodiment of the characteristic insecurities of all racisms, calls forth the most pulverizing responses to any resistance as a way to cover over its own insecurities. — David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race, 649 (#corroborates, via linked claim)

As I reflect on it now, the word that comes to me to describe my great-uncle’s disposition as he told the story is satisfaction. While he never spelled out its full meaning, the story seemed designed to convey a reassurance about our place in the social pecking order—that even if accidental, the death of a white man would demand retribution. When a white man was killed, in other words, the universe lurched sideways. Retaliatory racial violence promised to balance the scales, reinscribing white dominance particularly through its arbitrariness. — Robert P. Jones, White Too Long, 633 (#qualifies, via linked claim)
