Race remains a routine, current shaper of modern state violence

Evidence

Racial distinction, categorization, projection – in short, the threat of race – makes if not inevitable certainly easier the assertion, application, and targeting of terror. Race lubricates much modern institutional violence. This is not to say it does so as a stand-alone concept of production, regulation, and legitimation. It interacts with, magnifies and multiplies other categorical conceptions, formations, and rationalizations of structural privilege and denial, social elevation and exclusion. The weighting race has brought to modern social arrangements. But as a routine social fact shaping modern state violence, race is not an antiquated institutional apparatus, an antique hangover, an unfortunate holdover. Absent race, modern – and now late modern – social life would look dramatically different than it has. β€” David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race, 1843
