Racial self-sanctification operates as paranoid group self-defense against imagined impurities.

Evidence

Racial sanctification elevated the Chosen, those of European background, over the Cursed, Japheth over Ham but also over Shem (ascriptively those of Asian descent). Sanctification was directed at ā€œthe collectivity,ā€ not at ā€œthe individualā€ (to use Stokes’s terms though to different purpose), thus reinforcing sustained group membership. Increasingly, then, sanctification entailed purification, fusing apparent biology with assertive ideology, the physical like the landscape always invested with cultural and in this case sustained theological significance. The halo of whiteness had to protect itself from impurities, from pollutants, ultimately from degeneracy. Racial self-sanctification after all is a project of paranoid self-defense, of social prophylaxis, from demons of its own manufacture. Afrikaners made local the global self-importance of European racial configuration, fusing it with locally adapted Euro-theological conception. — David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race, 1386
