Progress and becoming were born together as politics in France and philosophy in Germany
Evidence
Can the idea of progress be kept apart from that of becoming? It would appear not. They were born at the same time, as politics (France) and as philosophy (in Germany: subsequently developed in Italy). In the idea of “becoming” there has been an attempt to save the most concrete aspect of “progress”—movement, and indeed dialectical movement. This also represents a development in depth, since progress tends to be linked with the vulgar notion of evolution. — Antonio Gramsci, Selections from the Prison Notebooks, 1279
