Pitch cues convey identity, intonation, and emotion beyond mere speech content
Evidence
Pitch perception also facilitates voice identification, intonation perception, and the perception of emotional state. Impairments to pitch perception could undermine one’s ability to gather this important information contained in speech. When listeners have difficulty representing the pitch of sounds, we expect a variety of difficulties that are related to communication, and these difficulties are not exclusive to speech understanding. — Jennifer Lentz, Psychoacoustics- Perception of Normal…, 1703
Pitch is a relevant cue in speech communication. It is the primary cue that distinguishes between male, female, and child speakers. The prosody of speech is also perceived as pitch changes during spoken sentences. Of course, pitch plays a very central role in music, as melody is composed of the perception of successive changes in pitch. The pitch of sound produced by a physical object also conveys information about its geometry, physical properties, and size, for example, large barrels produce a different pitch from small cans. — Ville Pulkki, Matti Karjalainen, Communication Acoustics- An…, 1076
Categorization
- DEFINE: Enumerates the non-content functions of pitch in speech that hearing loss strips away.
- XREF: Speaker-distinction, prosody, and object-size via pitch is a compact example for acoustic-communication application writing.
- SEED: Pitch as a multi-function acoustic cue — identity, emotion, and physical size — could anchor an essay on how one signal parameter serves many communication channels.
- corroborated: 2 independent passages support this claim — Jennifer Lentz, Psychoacoustics- Perception of Normal…, 1703; Ville Pulkki, Matti Karjalainen, Communication Acoustics- An…, 1076
