Perceptual hearing properties map onto objective signal analysis quantities

Evidence

The previous and the present chapters have discussed many properties of hearing, starting from simple signals and considering only their amplitude spectra. The analysis of basic psychoacoustic quantities with such signals helps to explain many phenomena in hearing. On the other hand, audio and speech signals can also be analysed by objective means, as shown in Chapter 3, for example by using spectral analysis, time–frequency plots, and spectrograms. This section focuses on the characteristics of hearing in relation to signal analysis, especially the ability to hear different characteristics in the magnitude and phase spectra. This helps develop an understanding of quality evaluation of audio techniques, which will be discussed further in Chapter 17. — Ville Pulkki, Matti Karjalainen, Communication Acoustics- An…, 1249
