Patch environment evolutionary theory cannot yet yield simple general predictions

Evidence

In summarizing this theoretical material, we can offer an observation and a caveat. Theory is rapidly developing to deal with evolution under heterogeneous environments, but the results so far are rather sketchy. One must be cautious when trying to compress conclusions from a rather varied lot of models into a very few general, biologically testable statements. We still have no simple predictions on the pattern of variation, much less on the nature of adaptive outcomes. — S. T. A. Pickett and P. S. White, eds., The Ecology of Natural Disturbance and…, 1829
