Patch dynamic theory rests on unverified assumptions about population equivalence

Evidence

Spatial hetero geneity and temporal variation in environment, and therefore selection, patch per sistence, rates of new recolonization, and rates of population growth, all need to be considered in some detail before one can trust such intuitive generalities. As Felsenstein (1976) put it, one makes death-defying leaps of faith in making numerous theoretical assumptions about equivalence of various population structures and of different migration characteristics. — S.
