Palestinian Islamists were accused by nationalists and leftists of serving Israeli occupation
Evidence
In Palestine, even though the rulers were Zionists, the MB nevertheless shied away from open confrontation after 1967 and sought to “prepare the generations” for an Islamic state. As Khaled Hroub notes, the Palestinian MB used this rationale to justify its policy of nonconfrontation with Israel until 1987 and despite “mounting accusations by other Palestinian nationalist and leftist organizations of cowardice or even of being indirectly in the service of the Israeli occupation, the Palestinian Islamists clung to their strategy of ‘preparing the generations’ for a long time.” However, sections of the MB broke with this quietist line and sought to reinterpret Islam to serve the goals of national liberation. They viewed the struggle to liberate Palestine as a religious struggle (jihad), which was obligatory for Muslims to fight because it took place under defensive conditions (occupation, dispossession, colonialism). Furthermore, they saw it as essential for Muslims to fight for the homeland, which they viewed as waqf, an inalienable religious endowment. — Deepa Kumar, Islamophobia and the Politics of Empire, 319
