Neural information is encoded in the patterning of voltage spikes

Evidence

The pathways themselves comprise many neurons, the “wiring system” of the body. Where neurons meet is known as a neural synapse, and typically the output from a single neuron, known as its terminal button, synapses with the inputs, known as dendrites, of many other neurons. Neurons function electrically to send information using voltage pulses, spikes or action potentials of around 0.1 of a volt, and it is the patterning of the spikes that encodes the information being transmitted. — David M.
