Negative dialectics and modernist art share a paradoxical suspended architecture
Evidence
We may therefore say that “the negative dialectic” represents an attempt to save philosophy itself, and the very idea of philosophizing, from a fetishization in time, from the optical illusion of stasis and permanency. Such antisystematic systematization, with all the deep inner contradictions it involves, reminds me of nothing quite so much as those equally contradictory monuments of modern art and literature which in their attempt to say everything end up saying only that one thing; which in their convulsive effort to present themselves, in almost medieval fashion, as the very book of the world itself, end up being but one book among others in a universe so disparate that no single thought can encompass it. Thus Barthes’ observation about Proust, “whose whole work constitutes a simultaneous approach to and postponement of Literature itself,” might also be applied to Adorno’s philosophical position: “The writer thereby falls again into the power of time, for it is impossible to negate within the temporal continuum without at the same time elaborating a positive art which must be destroyed in its turn. Thus the greatest modern works linger as long as possible, in a kind of miraculous suspension, on the very threshold of Literature itself, in that waiting-room situation in which the density of life is given and protracted without yet being destroyed by the creation of an order of signs.” — Fredric Jameson, Marxism and Form, 122
Categorization
- XREF: The Barthes-Proust parallel drawn onto Adorno: connects to Adorno’s own Aesthetische Theorie and to Jameson’s later use of the ‘waiting-room’ suspension in Postmodernism. Also echoes Auerbach’s figura and Woolf’s moments of being. — connects to: Art expresses utopian harmony negatively by embodying contradictions unresolved — Martin Jay, The Dialectical Imagination: A History…, 549; Adorno’s negative dialectics located emancipation’s hints in modern art’s distortion — Alex Callinicos, Against Postmodernism: A Marxist…, 380; Adorno framed Negative Dialectics as philosophy extending itself from within — Rolf Wiggershaus, The Frankfurt School: Its History,…, 2520 (+4 more)
- SEED: The ‘negative dialectic as modernist monument’ analogy — treating a philosophical method as if it were a work of art with a suspended threshold — could seed an essay comparing philosophical systems to cathedral-like self-presentations.
- DEFINE: Explicitly frames what ‘negative dialectic’ means in Jameson’s reading: antisystematic systematization, saving philosophy from temporal fetishization.
