Narrowband noise masks AM detection most in listeners with the poorest cochlear gain measures.
Evidence
The amount with which a 1-octave wide masking noise worsened AM detection was inversely correlated to DPOAE thresholds. The narrowband noise masker was shown to impact the hearing-impaired listeners more so than the normal hearing listeners, suggesting that this masker may be targeting a temporal coding deficit. β Dijk, Pim van, Physiology, Psychoacoustics andβ¦, 5870

- QUESTION: The claim that the masker specifically targets a temporal coding deficit is a tentative interpretation; worth deeper interrogation of the mechanism.
