Muslim women sustain communities through resilience against compounded hardship
Evidence
I was reminded of the pain that befell my mother when I met Kalsoum, a lifetime later in Wajir. Both faces, those of my mother and of the blind Somali mother, embodied the words of Egyptian feminist Nawaal El Saadawi: “Life is very hard. The only people who really live are those harder than life itself.” Those words scrolled across my mind again, alongside the faces of Kalsoum and El Saadawi, Ibtissam and Rokhaya Diallo, my grandmother and mother emerging prominently from a mosaic of powerful Muslim women I pictured so vividly. — Khaled A.
