Multiculturalism emerged as minority groups’ demand for public recognition of their identities
Evidence
There is currently a growing awareness that the traditional organization of modern Western democratic nation-states is not as equitable, or as egalitarian, as many have assumed it to be. In particular, the notion of a singular, common culture has been brought into serious question by a wide range of minority groups who have argued that it no longer adequately represents, if it ever did, the multiethnic composition of modern nationstates. Concomitantly, minority groups have argued for greater public recognition and representation in the public or civic realm of their ethnic, cultural, linguistic and/ or religious identities. This ideology or movement, call it what you will, has come to be known as multiculturalism. — David Theo Goldberg, John Solomos, A Companion to Racial and Ethnic Studies, 867
