Movie center channels and multichannel music demand loudspeakers that perform well solo

Evidence

In movies, the center channel is a monophonic source carrying almost all the dialog and all on-screen sounds much of the time. It and the front left and right channel loudspeakers must therefore perform well in isolation. In “middle-of-the-band” multichannel music recordings, all loudspeakers must do well as “solo” performers. Wide dispersion is of no value if the reflections cannot be heard, so this implies that some amount of room reflectivity should be present. — Toole, Floyd E, Sound reproduction- the acoustics and…, 458
