Most male students report attempting forced or manipulated sexual contact with women
Evidence
Most of my male students revealed they had at least once tried to have sexual contact with a woman (though not necessarily intercourse) through manipulation or force. Nearly all the women said they had been sexually harassed, many of them had been manipulated into having unwanted intercourse, a lot had had to fight off a rapist, and about one in eight had been raped. A similar number were sexually abused as children. β Bob Altemeyer, The Authoritarian Specter, 2523
Categorization
- QUESTION: This is an extraordinarily high prevalence claim β how was the sample/the question phrased? Worth chasing down for methodology before citing.
- SEED: The gulf between surveyed male self-reports of attempted coercion and public discourse about sexual assault prevalence is a striking angle for an essay.
- DEEPTHINKING: If most male students admit to at least one attempted forced/manipulative contact, then βmost menβ (not a predatory minority) are implicated β a threshold-reframing finding about who commits sexual coercion.
