Modern critiques of Hegel expose our historical limits, not his

Evidence

Yet these criticisms are based on our own historical vantage-point. They presuppose the increasing intellectual specialization of the sciences in defining their various fields and methods, as well as a greater psychological awareness of the structure and value of individual life. They represent, therefore, not so much an intrinsic, logical critique of Hegel, as an almost physical discrepancy between his moment in time and our own, and it is this paradox which is at the center of Adorno’s reading of Hegel. From our inability to realize the Hegelian vision of totality it does not follow that this vision is not fuller and richer, more concrete, than anything we can presently imagine. The impossibility of the Hegelian system for us is not a proof of its intellectual limitations, its cumbersome methods and theological superstructure; on the contrary, it is a judgment on us and on the moment of history in which we live, and in which such a vision of the totality of things is no longer possible. — Fredric Jameson, Marxism and Form, 105

Categorization

  • DEEPTHINKING: The historicized self-reflexive reading — our inability to grasp totality is a judgment on us, not on Hegel — is the foundational gesture of Adorno’s dialectical criticism and a dense, paradigm-shifting claim about how critique relates to its object.
  • XREF: Directly the Frankfurt-School method the reader is tracing: connects Adorno’s Hegel reading to Lukács on reification and to the general historicizing move of dialectical criticism. — connects to: Hegel’s system is historically unreadable as a whole in modern society — Fredric Jameson, Marxism and Form, 107; Misreading Hegel stems from constructed reading habits, not inadequate education; Hegel remains a thinker of the future against current philosophical suspicion (+1 more)
  • QUESTION: Worth chasing how this ‘judgment on us’ position reconciles with Adorno’s own late pessimism about totality after Auschwitz.
