Moderates won intellectuals by offering a dignified national philosophy

Evidence

Gioberti offered the intellectuals a philosophy which appeared original and at the same time national, such as would put Italy at least on the same level as the more advanced nations, and give a new dignity to Italian thought. Mazzini, on the other hand only offered woolly statements, and philosophical allusions which to many intellectuals, especially Neapolitans, must have appeared empty chatter (the Abbe Galiani had taught them to ridicule such ways of thinking and reasoning). — Antonio Gramsci, Selections from the Prison Notebooks, 541
