Loud low-frequency tones cause a characteristic two-phase threshold change called the bounce
Evidence
Hirsh and Ward ( 1952 ) observed temporary deteriorations of human absolute thresholds about 2 min after presenting subjects with an intense, non-traumatic LF tone. Later on, the term ‘Bounce’ was used to describe bimodal changes in absolute thresholds starting with a sensitisation period followed by an about equal-duration temporary desensitisation (Hughes 1954 ). — Dijk, Pim van, Physiology, Psychoacoustics and…, 3706
Categorization
- DEFINE: Defines the psychoacoustic term ‘bounce’ as bimodal threshold change: sensitisation then equal-duration desensitisation.
- QUESTION: What mechanism — the same OHC/IHC machinery the next paragraph describes — produces the biphasic bounce? Worth tracing.
