Liberties granted within a repressive society can themselves serve repression
Evidence
To the denial of freedom, even of the possibility of freedom, corresponds the granting of liberties where they strengthen the repression. The degree to which the population is allowed to break the peace wherever there still is peace and silence, to be ugly and to uglify things, to ooze familiarity, to offend against good form is frightening. It is frightening because it expresses the lawful and even organized effort to reject the Other in his own right, to prevent autonomy even in a small, reserved sphere of existence. In the overdeveloped countries, an ever-larger part of the population becomes one huge captive audiencecaptured not by a totalitarian regime but by the liberties of the citizens whose media of amusement and elevation compel the Other to partake of their sounds, sights, and smells … Massive socialization begins at home and arrests the development of consciousness and conscience. — Rolf Wiggershaus, The Frankfurt School, 2582
Categorization
- DEEPTHINKING: This inversion of liberty into a mechanism of repression — where the citizenry’s media amusements compel the Other to participate in their sounds and smells — is a denser twist on the ‘repressive tolerance’ thesis: freedom of expressive selfhood becomes an instrument of social coercion that arrests the development of consciousness itself.
- ADDENDUM: Connects to ‘Complaints About Immodesty’ in that both treat the regulation of appearance/self-expression as a theater of class and power, here inverted so that liberality of expression is itself the repressive mode.
- XREF: Resonates with the ‘lo-fi soundscape’ idea where constant sonic presence erases the possibility of a distinct self — noise as a coercion of the captive audience. — connects to: Unlimited individual freedom breeds new repression through natural inequality — Georg Simmel, on individuality and social forms_…, 534; Oppressors invoke their own freedom to justify oppressing others; The system’s celebrated freedoms function as instruments of domination — Herbert Marcuse, One-Dimensional Man: Studies in the…, 45 (+7 more)
- DEFINE: Illustrates the Frankfurt School’s remaking of the concept of freedom/repression: granting liberties can strengthen repression rather than relieve it.
