Kickboxing emerged as a Japanese hybrid of karate and Muay Thai in the 1960s.

Evidence

The empirical data presented in this paper comes out of a wider immersive ethnographic project undertaken at a Polish-owned Muay Thai/Kickboxing gym in East London, pseudo-anonymized as Origins Combat Gym (Singh 2022).
