Justice is revenge deferred and transformed into objective legal procedure
Evidence
Of course Odysseus’ restraint is not definitive but an adjournment of action: he carries out the acts of revenge later, and all the more thoroughly: his patience is perseverance. To some extent his behavior still openly features as spontaneous intention something that is later concealed in total, imperative denial, in order thus to assume irresistible force in the subjection of everything natural. With its transference into the subject, with its emancipation from a mythically given content, this subjection becomes “objective”; objectively self-sufficient in comparison with all particular human aims, it becomes the universal rational law. Already in Odysseus’ patience, and unmistakably after the slaughter of the suitors, revenge becomes legal procedure: the ultimate fulfillment of the mythic compulsion becomes the objective instrument of domination. Justice is restrained revenge. — Theodor W. Adorno, Max Horkheimer, Dialectic of Enlightenment, 305
Categorization
- DEFINE: Traces the conceptual move whereby restrained revenge becomes ‘justice’ and ‘universal rational law’ — a core dialectic-of-enlightenment definition.
- DEEPTHINKING: The compressed claim that objective legal rationality is mythic compulsion internalized into the subject — justice as restrained revenge — is a dense, paradigm-shifting frame, one of the book’s central theses.
