Ivorian rebels looted BCEAO agencies of over thirty million euros.

Evidence

The first one took place in August 2002 against the Abidjan branch. The second one took place in September 2003 against the Bouaké agency (in the centre of the country), and lasted several days, causing the death of at least 23 people. In all likelihood, these ‘heists’ were organised by the armed rebellions of the New Forces, led by Guillaume Soro. Since 19 September 2002, the day of the attempted coup against president Laurent Gbagbo, they controlled 60 per cent of the Ivorian territory. The rebels had an operating base in Blaise Compaoré’s Burkina Faso and had established their headquarters in Bouaké, the second largest city of the Ivory Coast. It is estimated that in the attack on the Bouaké agency they managed to walk away with around 20 billion CFA francs, over €30 million. — Fanny Pigeaud_ Ndongo Samba Sylla, Africa’s Last Colonial Currency, 278
