French soldiers tasked with guarding BCEAO offices stole from them.
Evidence
The French soldiers, who were supposed to protect the agency, seized upon the opportunity to pocket 38 million CFA francs (about €57,000). … In September 2004, twelve French soldiers illegally emptied the coffers of the BCEAO agency in Man (in the west of the country, in rebel territory) that they were supposed to guard. They were repatriated to France with discretion. In 2005 they received sentences ranging from two months to one year for theft and stolen goods, for a total of €337,000. These various armed attacks never went to trial in the Ivory Coast or in Senegal, where the BCEAO headquarters are located. — Fanny Pigeaud_ Ndongo Samba Sylla, Africa’s Last Colonial Currency, 278
