Italian city-state oligarchies preceded and legitimized princely dynasties
Evidence
The “Signoria ” or council of notables became the effective power in the Italian city states in the fourteenth century, replacing the “communal” democracy of their earlier development and representing a transitional phase before the emergence, in most cases, of a single dominant family dynasty. Such dynasties were legitimised in the fifteenth century by Pope or Emperor, as the Principato or Princely regime. — Antonio Gramsci, Selections from the Prison Notebooks, 2324
