Islamophobia is an ideology justifying racism, not a Hegelian dialectic.
Evidence
While there have been many definitions of Islamophobia, I agree with Stephen Sheehi that Islamophobia (like all other racisms) is an ideology, a body of everyday knowledge and beliefs, that justifies the regulation of Muslims like it does other races. Racism in the form of Islamophobia and Anti- Blackness includes not just individual discrimination but structural expropriation and exploitation. … I differ from Professor Beydoun, the chief proponent of his popular theory in the legal literature that Islamophobia is a dialectic. This misunderstands how a dialectic works, as I note in the “Introduction” to Islamophobia and the Law. Islamophobia is not produced dialectically because there is no tension or aporia between two forces that are then synthesized to result in it per the philosophical concept. The more accurate description might be that it is the result of a negative dialectic: racism perpetrated by the dominant group and the resistance from the members of the group (Muslims and Islamicized) resulting in the creation of the race. But it is not Islamophobia or the racism that results—that is one half of the dialectic. It cannot be both the cause and the effect. — Cyra Akila Choudhury, Racecraft and Identity in the Emergence…, 46
Categorization
- XREF: Directly engages Beydoun’s ‘dialectical Islamophobia’ framework — the competing account the reader tracks against Aziz’s Racial Muslim thesis. — connects to: Islamophobia has coalesced Muslims into a distinct racial group and Islam into a race. — Cyra Akila Choudhury, Racecraft and Identity in the Emergence…, 61; European colonial racial practice of differentiating Islam preceded and enabled modern Islamophobia; Race analysis better captures anti-Muslim discrimination than religious-discrimination framing — Cyra Akila Choudhury, Racecraft and Identity in the Emergence…, 317 (+11 more)
- DEFINE: Clarifies her core negative-dialectic model: collective racism plus resistance produces the race; Islamophobia cannot be both cause and effect.
