Islamophobia’s core harm is essentializing all Muslims as enemies, not fear itself

Evidence

As indicated in chapter 1, a key component of Islamophobia is the tendency to portray Muslims as a monolithic bloc. Once Muslims are regarded as fundamentally sharing the same attitudes and commitments, it is not difficult to conclude that one violent Muslim, or one intolerant Muslim, makes all Muslims violent or intolerant. The events discussed in this chapter demonstrate how the actions of a few—Muhammad Bouyeri in Amsterdam, four young men in the London bombings, or a handful of imams from Denmark—are often presumed to be representative of all or most Muslims. — Green, Todd H, The Fear of Islam_ An Introduction to…, 433 (#expands, via linked claim)

The list of closed views begins with the notion that Islam lacks both diversity and internal differences and disagreements. In other words, all Muslims are basically the same, holding uniform worldviews and ideologies. In many ways, this perception drives much of the Islamophobia that one encounters in the West. If Islam is monolithic and unchanging, and if media coverage focuses on violence or terrorism carried out in the name of Islam by a small minority of Muslims, then it is easy to draw the conclusion that what one sees on the news is somehow endemic to Islam and all Muslims. — Green, Todd H, The Fear of Islam_ An Introduction to…, 53 (#expands, via linked claim)

As the AVOT statement makes clear, it is not simply the violent section of the Islamist movement that they wish to “research,” but “Islam and Islamism” as a whole. It shouldn’t be surprising, then, that simply being a Muslim makes you worthy of suspicion, according to this logic. Drawing a page from the McCarthyist playbook, Gaffney was one of many who claimed that Obama might be a “secret Muslim.” The implication, of course, is that being a Muslim is sufficient cause for not trusting him. — Deepa Kumar, Islamophobia and the Politics of Empire, 540 (#corroborates, via linked claim)
