Ingroup love extremes do not drive outgroup prejudice

Evidence

Extremities of love prejudice, however, do not necessarily predict extremities of outgroup prejudice (Brewer & Brown, 1998; Mummendey & Otten, 1998). Also, in collectivist East Asian settings, ingroups are seen more modestly than in Western samples (Cuddy et al., 2004); they are characterized moderately on both warmth and competence, instead of high on both, compared to other groups. Nevertheless, East Asian cultures otherwise demonstrate the same competence/warmth map of outgroups. Thus, outgroup stereotypes do not necessarily require extremes of love prejudice. — , Rudman, Laurie A - On the Nature of…, 327

  • QUESTION: If ingroup favoritism doesn’t require outgroup denigration, how strongly should contact theory lean on decategorizing shared ingroups?
