Individualized HRTF data is required for reliable crosstalk cancellation
Evidence
In this system a listener seated in the sweet spot is treated to a facsimile of binaural headphone listening, with an important difference: all sounds are perceived as external, because they are generated externally from visible sources. Normal small head movements are tolerated, and the listener can experience convincing sound localizations in directions outside the normal stereo soundstage, up to ±90° being very persuasive. Most listeners are no longer aware of the loudspeakers themselves, they “disappear”, and the sense of distance is 78. dominated by cues in the recordings. Obviously, the crosstalk cancelling process involves the HRTFs and, lacking such information for individual listeners, assumptions are made. The success of the cancellation is uncertain. Finally, room reflected sounds corrupt the illusion, so it is necessary to create a listening situation in which the direct sound is dominant. The effect is very persuasive in “near-field” listening situations, as at a computer. — Toole, Floyd E, Sound reproduction- the acoustics and…, 305
