Higher-level hearing models rely on assumptions tested only against psychoacoustic data

Evidence

The above-mentioned auditory models are related to a relatively low level of neural processing. It is useful and necessary to simulate the functionality of hearing at higher levels to understand the functionality of the auditory system in detail. The functional models may either focus on a specific phenomenon or aim to describe the bigger picture of information processing. Unfortunately, there is a lack of precise knowledge and experimental data regarding phenomena requiring higher-level cognitive processing, and the models are based on high-level assumptions of neurophysiology and subsequent testing of the models against psychoacoustic data. — Ville Pulkki, Matti Karjalainen, Communication Acoustics- An…, 1650
